Baker Library opened in 1928 and was designed by the architect Jens Frederick Larson. It was modeled from the architecture of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Independence Hall was designed by Edmund Woolley and Andrew Hamilton and completed in 1753.

Differences between the Baker Library and Independence Hall include: scale (Baker Library being taller than Independence Hall), windows (size for the first and second floor, as well as the shape of the second floor set) and tower structure (Baker Library's design does not include the second architectural tier of Independence Hall, which maintains the section with the circular window, the change on the facade of Baker Library includes the year of the building's completion as well as the shield/coat-of-arms of the College.
