COR 8.25.22: Understanding Transgender Identity with guest speaker Amanda Rosenblum '07
To quote classmate Rueben Stokes:
WOW! JUST WOW! This is a must see! Last night I joined some of our classmates in attending a powerful and enlightening zoom presentation/discussion on gender identity, a subject that in some way impacts each and every one of us. Gender is not Sexuality and can be an intimidating subject for boomers like us. We grew up in an “either or” binary world of only two genders. Our brilliant presenter, Amanda Rosenblum, Dartmouth ’07 and DGALA Vice President revealed how subsequent generations, our kids and grandkids, are dismantling the barriers and developing fluid and inclusive language to describe the intersectional variations of how they identify and present who they really are. In less than 45 minutes my knowledge level and more importantly, my comfort level increased dramatically. Thanks to the ’79 Committee on Race for making this possible. WOW! JUST WOW!

'79 Online - Conversations on Race Year-End Update
When the ’79 Conversations On Race concluded in late August, we shared with you our desire to transition our efforts to tasks that we could do as individuals, as groups and as a class to effect change regarding diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I). We conducted three “bucket” Zoom calls during the third week of September with classmates. We discussed how we may advance DE&I efforts as described previously. Below is a list of the topics that seemed to pique your interests:
Bucket One: Personal and Group Enrichment
· Class trip to African-American museums
o Example: EJI Legacy Museum From Enslavement to Incarceration and other important sites
· Working on creating a “children’s book” discussion/reading group
· Working on developing a “film/video” discussion group
· Continuing ’79 Conversations On Race and Critical Issues – Expanding on topics and issues raised in the various discussions
Bucket Two: Impacting the College
· Developing an effective mentoring program for students and recent alumni
· Working with the college to develop a curriculum based forum for discussion/education around these issues
· Potentially sponsoring an event/forum/symposium to encourage BIPOC faculty recruitment/retention
o Including exploring collaboration and partnerships with BIPOC alumni and/or College initiatives on inclusive excellence
Bucket Three: Reaching Beyond the Green
· Dovetailing with ongoing Conversations drawing on the expertise and experience of our Classmates to increase knowledge and/or develop action steps
· Organizing classmates with specific skills sets to assist under-resourced communities, e.g. Physicians, Financial Literacy, Emotional Health & Identity, etc.
As a result of the bucket Zoom calls, there was an overwhelming interest in continuing the ’79 Conversations On Race. Our thought is to schedule conversations periodically, possibly starting with Conversation 5 in January of next year. Topic yet to be determined. The class trip was popular as well; however, planning this activity is on hold due to the pandemic. Many museums are closed at this time. This will be explored later in 2021.
Several classmates have responded with thoughts, ideas and research regarding how to develop a viable mentoring program. These efforts are ongoing.
The committee thought it would be prudent to take a pause this fall. As we know, the country is in the midst of a general election. Following that is the holiday season. As stated previously, we may start with Conversation 5 in January.
In closing, we wanted to reach out to you and provide a quick update regarding activities since we held our conversations this summer. We will have more details in the upcoming Winter 2021 newsletter. We also want to thank you for your interest and participation! You may have noticed the Class of ‘79 was recognized by the Dartmouth Class Officer Association Executive Board and Alumni Relations in a meeting held the week of October 16th. It is our hope that this recognition will inspire other alumni and classes to embark on activities similar to ours!

Dartmouth '79 LIfeNet launch
“Lean on me when you’re not strong. I’ll be your friend; I’ll help you carry on .…”
Last November we wrote about forming ’79 LifeNet: a network of classmates supporting other classmates facing personal or family crisis, depression or suicide. We have lost too many classmates to suicide and don’t want to lose any more.
Many of you offered to help. From this start, we have created three pages of ’79 LifeNet resources, accessible from the right side of the top banner on the Class of 1979 home page:
• The ’79 LifeNet launch page, describing the program;
• The National Wellness Resources page, linking to professional resources for times of immediate crisis;
• And ’79 Classmate Resources, providing immediate access by email and phone to 20 classmates who can confidentially listen, support, and connect you with professional help.
Please access our ’79 LifeNet pages and review their important content. Consider taking the QPR suicide prevention and risk training program described on the National Wellness page. We need to talk openly and directly about suicide. Experts teach that if you have any question or suspicion that a loved one or friend is contemplating suicide, immediately ask them, listen to them, help them.
