Class Notes, November/December 2006

Looking north from Moore Hall to the site of the 1953 Commons, with the beautiful new McLaughlin Dormitory Cluster on my right, I am reminded once again of the wisdom and foresight of Paul Paganucci

as he worked with President McLaughlin to acquire the land on which Mary Hitchcock stood . His vision is fast becoming a reality as the north campus begins to take shape.

Eighty-one of our classmates and their wives had the opportunity to observe all the new building being accomplished at Dartmouth this summer as the Class enjoyed another super maxi-mini reunion. Under the able direction of Cathy and Bob Callender with the on-campus assistance of Harlan Fair, our reunion included some activity for everyone. The weather cooperated providing us with very comfortable, sunny days and lovely evenings. Included in our events were golf under the aegis of Bob Simpson at Andy Sigler's fabulous new golf course, tennis, under the direction of Jack Zimmermann, a canoe trip with Marian and Put Blodgett leading our paddlers down the Connecticut River, and a walking tour of the campus. There were cocktails and wonderful hors d'oeuvres at the Hanover Inn with talks by Dean Carol Folt who spoke of her vision for the academic direction of Dartmouth and Professor Donald Pease who once again charmed the class, this time with a talk about Dr. Seuss and Dartmouth. In addition, Donna Reilly lead two groups on tours of the Hood followed by lunch at the Canoe Club, while Cathy Callender lead another tour of Quechee Village with lunch at Simon Pearce. There were dinners at Phil Beekman's and at Cynthia and Dave Donovan's homes with a cocktail party at Donna and Chuck Reilly's at which Coach Buddy Teevens spoke. Many chose to go to Opera North and see La Traviata which was being performed there. On another day there was a boat trip around Lake Sunapee with lunch aboard the boat followed by a trip to the New London Playhouse where Camelot was playing. I can say without equivocation that this was yet another in a series of magnificent Maxi-mini reunions. Many thanks to all of our hosts.

The Valley News reported that Dartmouth sponsored a conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first meeting to discuss articifial intelligence which took place at Dartmouth. Brock Brower, an adjunct professor at Dartmouth helped to coordinate the conference. Brock says, "These are the cutting-edge people of every aspect of AI in the world, and they are discussing reason, vision, all the future ways that things will go."

Sadly I must report the death of three of our loyal classmates, Bill McCarthy, former class president Blake Hering, and John Auerbach. For the Class, I send our condolences to Bill's wife, Beverly, and their three children, Mary Sue, Mike '79, and Steve '82 and to Blake's wife, Linda, and his children, Heather, Cameron '81, Kimberly, John, Brooks, and Hillary, and to Barbara Jean Ross Jones, John's wife. We are all saddened by their loss.
