1953 Class Notes, Nov/Dec 2007

Though it is mid-summer, fall is fast upon us, and our mini-reunion schedule for the football season  is now complete.  Anne and Harlan Fair will host a reception after the Colgate game, followed by a gathering at  Donna and  Chuck Reilly’s home following the Penn game. Homecoming weekend there will be number of different events ;  a dinner prior to and a reception after the bonfire at the Zimmerman Lounge in Blunt followed by our Class meeting at 9:00 AM on Saturday before the Columbia game. After the game, there will be a party and dinner at Phil Beekman’s home. Bonnie and Dave Siegal  are  hosting the mini at their home after the Cornell  game, with the final event of the fall at the Zimmerman Lounge , a  party following the Princeton game. Try to make one or more of these when you are in town. They are casual and lots of fun. Many thanks to Harlan and all of  our hosts for welcoming us into their homes.

In conjunction with their “Intensive Seminars for Journalists”, The Knight Center for Specialized Journalism is offering as a new resource, a website entitled, ”Beat Guide: Courts and the Law” in which Aaron Epstein, award-winning journalist offers a guide  designed to navigate the complexities  of legal reporting. His guide includes advice, a glossary of legal terms, and useful computer information. He has gleaned this information from 45 years of reporting on our legal system, 25 of those spent as legal issues reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer and for the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau.

There is no more fitting venue for an exhibit of  paintings and contemporary wood art  that interprets the arcane beauty of nature than the historic and beautiful estate, The Fells.  Artists and conservationists Marion and Put Blodgett have  exhibited their wonderful artwork for two months this summer at this elegant mansion receiving much acclaim from both the critics and the public. Congratulations!

Liliane and Ron Lazar  celebrated their 50th anniversary and Ron’s 75th birthday with a delightful dinner at the beautiful  Milbrook Club in Greenwich Connecticut. Rosalie and Ray Alexander, Roberta and Nathan Burkan, Vivian and Dick Cahn, Nancy and Allen Collins, Valerie and Fred England, Barbara and John Kennedy, Dick Loewenthal, Irma Napoleon, Anne and Jack Newton, Bonnie and Dave Siegal, Timmie and Gil Shapiro, Bobby and Mark Smoller, Fred Whittemore, and Michael Zarin joined Glen Lazar ’79 and Sharon Lazar Waxman ’83 and others  enjoying a super party topped off  by all the Dartmouth’s   singing a rousing  medley of Dartmouth songs.

I regret once again  that I must report  the demise of  seven of our classmates: Michael Duffy, Wales Dixon, William Hyde, Merrill Johnson,  Dick McCostis, Dudley Milliken Jr., and Bay Yee.. They will be missed by all of us in the 1953 Family. I offer on behalf of the entire Class our heartfelt condolences to their families.
