Class Notes, September/October 2006"Good luck and be well." Words spoken thousands of times by Bill Beutel were neither empty nor hollow. They were Bill's sincere wishes as he signed off on his Eyewitness News broadcast each night. On May 15, 2006, members of the TV industry, politicians, classmates, and family gathered for a memorial service for Bill at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Icons of TV news who had worked with him, a former mayor of New York, his son Peter, and various other dignitaries spoke, but none more elegantly than long-time friend and classmate Richard "Blossom" Bloom. In a memorial service befitting a very able, accomplished and exceptionally good guy, each in turn spoke of his or her relationship to Bill. The theme was consistent: Bill's creativity, his competence, his generosity, and integrity along with his gentle kindness. It was a fitting memorial for Bill and was followed by a lovely reception given by WABC.Anita Calkins has sent me a warm and enthusiastic letter in which she writes of her large and loving family. Son Tad is back home after serving a year in Iraq, daughter Kathy '92 has given them a grandson, Ronald Theodore Calkin Keyes, and daughter Chrissy has returned home with her family from London. Dick is still very active doing mediations and arbitrations, and according to Anita, does not seem to be slowing down at all. He has written a new book dealing with arbitrations and mediations, published by Aspen Publishers which came out in June. In addition, Dick has practiced law for 33 years, was a Law School Professor for ten years, founded the American Mock Trial Association, has written 2 other books and 12 Law Review articles as well as being Commissioner of the Character and Fitness Committee of the Illinois State Bar Association. I am happy to report that John Springer will be our new representative to the Alumni Council representing our Class as well as the Class of 1954. He is the 30th member of our class to serve in that capacity. Congratulations, John! Harlan Fair announces that following our Maxi-Mini on August 13-16, these minis have been planned for the Fall:
With much sadness, I must report that Corky Kay's daughter Jennifer '86 passed away from renal cancer. On the way to meeting his other daughter, Jane, to make funeral arrangements, Corky suffered a massive heart attack and also died. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Donna and their children, Jane and Joshua in this troubled time. Mark H.
