Class Notes, January/February 2007

In the galaxy known as the Class of 1953, a 14th star has been identified, our Classmate of the Year, Andrew Sigler. Donald Carpenter Goss eloquently presented Andy with the award at our Class Dinner. Andy has served as a member of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees and an overseer of the Tuck School. After a stint as a 1st lieutenant in the Marines, he went to work for Champion Paper Co where he remained for his entire career. As its CEO for 24 years, he oversaw its growth from $400,000/year to $7 billion dollars/year. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of GE, RCA, Bristol Meyers, and Chemical Bank as well as for non-profits like the Yale School of Management. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Fairfield College. Presently he operates a model dairy farm in Norwich which is used in teaching the latest techniques and best in dairy farming and animal husbandry. He also has built a wonderful, challenging golf course in Montcalm, NH. Congratulations, Andy!

Following delightful parties the previous two Saturdays at the Simpson's and the Reilly's, Homecoming was another huge success for the mini reunion team: Dave Donovan, Harlan Fair, and Bob Callender. Twenty-eight enjoyed dinner at the Inn before the bonfire, 30 or more attended a cocktail party later that night. On Saturday morning the Class held its Annual Meeting at which the following were present: Skip Adams, Phil Beekman, Put Blodgett, Tom Bloomer, Ed Boyle, Bob Callender, Fred Carelton, Bill Chamberlain, Dick Collins, John Dickason, John Dodge, Dave Donovan, Dick Dunham, Hank Edler, Fred England, Harlan Fair, Dick Fleming, Karl Friedmann, Gene Gabianelli, Donald Carpenter Goss, John Kennedy, Ron Lazar, Dick O'Connor, Donna and Chuck Reilly, John Rogers, Dave Siegal, Bob Simpson, Fred Stephens, Russ Smale, Mark Smoller, and Tom Wilson. Other classmates in attendance during the weekend were: Clark Brink, Chris Chrisman, Jack Crisp, Phil Fast, Bob Henderson, Lowell Holoway, John Horne, Bill Johnson, Jack Patten, Peter Schwartzkopf, Andy Sigler, John Springer, Chuck Talamo, Tim Thomas, and Jack Zimmermann. After the game, our numbers swelled to 79 for a lovely dinner at Phil Beekman's home.

His work has impacted upon so many in the Upper Valley as well as elsewhere around the world that it was only a matter of time before The O. Ross McIntyre, M.D. Foundation for Cancer Research was established . With funds already reaching the $550,000 mark and a goal of 2.5 million dollars so that a professorship might be endowed in his name, we honor Ross by contributing to this fund. Ross served as Director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center for 24 years. In addition to a lifetime of research Ross presided over many Institutes and Societies having to do with cancer research and treatment fulfilling his vision of creating an environment at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center in which people with a variety of interests in cancer could work together as colleagues in interdisciplinary programs.

Sadly I must report the death of our classmate, Richard Werner. We offer our condolences to his wife, Joy and their children. Mark H. Smoller; 4 Schuyler Drive, Jericho, NY 11753; (516) 938-3616; dartmark@optonline.net
