As always, we have lost classmates. There is no easy way to report these losses so I will report what has been sent to me by widows, friends and the Alumni Office.


We received word of from his widow Ann, of the death of Thurston J. Carpenters on December 12, 2003 in Pittsfield, MA Thurston graduated from Tufts Dental School in 1950. He established a general dentistry practice in Pittsfield where he practiced until 1988.He was a consultant to Northeast Delta Dental, a clinical instructor for Harvard Dental School. While at Dartmouth he played in the “Green Collegians” with ‘45er Harry Judge. Other undergraduate interests while at Dartmouth were Heorot-Chi Phi. He leaves three children, William Carpenter, S. Carpenter, & Judith Carpenter.



This from James (Jim) Eckels, “I am saddened to report the death of Charles David “Bebe” Miller on November 29, 2003 at his ranch in Shingletown, CA. His health had been declining since he retired from his medical practice in 1999.
Jim and wife Jean Eckels are enjoying life in Southern Arizona and spending time in Northern CA and Oregon with their three children and grandchildren. The have hopes of making the 60th.
Frederick Covalt passed away Dec. 11, 2003 at the Paradise hill Care Center in San Diego, CA. He was 80 years old and was a diabetic with complications. Two daughters survive him.

John Elliott Leggat January 10, 2004. Undergraduate activities were, The Dartmouth, Marine V-12, Chi Gamma Epsilon/Kappa Sigma. Dartmouth activities: Secretary (1985), President (19591966;1980-1985), District Enrollment Director (1962-1970), CFD Leadership Committee (1982), Class Agent (1974-1984;1986-1990), Reunion Giving Committee (1985—1985;1991-1991;1994-1995), Dartmouth College Fund Committee (1996-1996) Special Gifts Volunteer (1992-1996),Executive Committee (1985-1997), Alumni Council(1995-1998) Leadership Agent (1991-2004). John leaves his widow Ruth Leggat, a son John Leggat D83M91, and Bruce Leggat. Classmates attending the service for John, were Don Cole, Doug Donahue, Harry Hampton, Pres. Joe Michael, Jr. Tom Yates. The organ prelude discreetly slipped in to a few Dartmouth songs. If that did not touch a number of hearts, the final verse of the Hymn of Adoration did.
“ Eternal Father, grant, we pray
To all Marines, both night and day,
The courage honor, strength and skill
Their land to serve, thy law fulfill;
Be thou the shield forevermore
From every peril to the Corps.”


George “Shorty” Bruce Pierce died December 16, 2003. Undergraduate Activities, Glee Club, Navy V-12, Theta Delta Chi
Dartmouth Activities, Executive Committee (1985-2003) Treasurer (2003), Regional Agent (1992-2002) class Agent (1984-1986; 1988-1991) Shorty leaves his widow Allon, three children, Wendy, Allon and Bruce.


Charles Waldo Murphy departed this life on October 7, 2003 of natural causes. Charles leaves three children Sharon, Thomas and Emily.


Arthur Milham Carey passed away November 26, 2003. Undergraduate activities, Green Key Society, Panarchy, Sphinx
Dartmouth Activities, Fraternity/Sorority Agent (1991-2002).
His children are Arthur, Linda Rinta and Stephen.


Winthrop Twining Sargeant died October 21, 2003, cause unknown. Undergraduate activities, Phi Delta Alpha/Phi Delta Theta.
Dartmouth Activities, President (1966-1971) Regional Agent (1992-1996), Leadership Chair (1985-1985), Class Agent (1984,1986-1987,1989-1991). Winthrop leaves behind his widow Shirley and three children Carol, Louise and Paul.


Edward Stillman Bundy passed away at Hospice Residences of Martin & St. Lucia, Stuart, FL on November 29, 2003.Undergraduate Activities, Navy V-12, Kappa Kappa Kappa/KCK. Edward leaves a widow Felicia and two children, E. Scott Bundy D76, and Darcie Bundy.


Bertram Glovsky died January 3, 2004 leaving behind a widow Beverly and three children, Steven, Patricia and Roger D80 E82.

Howard Lee Hoots passed away at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Clinic in Lebanon, NH. from a cerebral hemorrhage on December 28, 2003. Howard was in the Navy V-12.
Dartmouth Activities include, Mini-Reunion chair (1996-2003), President (1983-1985), Job Development/career Advisor (1987-1987) Executive Committee (1985-1997) Reunion Committee (1991),Nat’l Research Development Program (1989-1990).His Widow Lillian and three children survive him, Geoffrey D70 E71, Michael and Thomas.


Charles Peters Anderson died at the Haywood Regional Medical Center in Stuart, FL, December 21, 2003. His widow Jean and three children survive him, Charles, Mary Stenger and Frances Shields.


Floyd Howard Farrant II M.D. passed away January 16, 2004. No further information is available. Undergraduate activities, Phi Delta Alpha/Phi Delta Theta.


James Edward Doole was deceased February 24, 2004. His widow Patricia survives him along with three children James, Pamela Alani and Wendy Schwark. Undergraduate activities, Green Key Society, Phi Gamma Delta, Sphinx.


Eugene Taylor Pinney died on March 6, 2004 leaving his widow Judith and three children Ellen, Nancy and Thomas. Undergraduate activities, Alpha Delta/Alpha Delta Phi.


Word was received of the death of Hunt Bennett’s daughter, Anne, due to an automobile accident caused by a ruptured aneurysm, on January 16, 2004.


Also the death of Scott Perrot’s wife, Nonie earlier this year.


Don (DeB) Campbell writes that his wife of 53 years, Mimi, passed away after a long illness, in October 2003. Also in the same year his older daughter Leslie Rampey and her husband were killed an auto accident. Don reports that he rather likes it in Faulkner-land at the University of Mississippi and plans to remain there for a while.
