’45 Mail Call
First, I would like to thank all who sent in Green Cards and thanks for the many nice compliments that were enclosed. Dartmouth College Class of 1945 President Joseph Michael called the meeting to order at 8:00 AM with
approximately 39 classmates, wives and widows present. (There were approximately
66 people attending three sessions of the Reunion.) Joe told of the receipt
of a letter from Ellie Mover telling of his terminal cancer with a prognosis
of 4 to 8 months. A motion to approve the minutes of the Executive Committee
Meeting of September 28, 2002 was passed. Secretary Cain noted there
was a sign-up sheet to identify those present at this meeting, going
around the room. He also told everyone that there were spare copies of
the Prof. Wood brochure on war memorials around the Dartmouth campus
available. Paul Caravatt told of the technical advances that are coming to the
website. The opening is to be changed and be more timely to allow photos
to be printed in 48 hours with names to go along. The College will also
be making changes every 24 hours. Classmates should change their computer “Favorites” procedures.
Obits might be available quicker with permission from the families. Submitted by Secretary Craig Cain Harry Roberts, (M.D Ret-OBGYN) is grateful at age 80 for feeling well, doing well, still walking & jogging, playing tennis four times a week, sometimes five times and am here to tell you that old Hogs can learn new tricks and get better and stronger with practice. My very best wishes and greetings to all former Dartmouth guys who might have known me! We’re blessed to have had that experience. Harry has a couple of new phone numbers home: 858-272-5646, cell 858-945-5673, e-mails Robertsobg@AOL.com. He still has the same address in San Diego. Rodney (Rod) Walser and wife Cindy have some suggestion for the 60th reunion committee: “Keep it simple, we’re all going to be 80+. Could the Hanover Inn accommodate the anticipated number at a negotiated …rate?” Visited Kay and Jack Holmes in Michigan this past August, both look great…talk with Bob Ross periodically. Plan to see Dick Murray in Jan or Feb. Address remains the same, but new e-mail address: R.A.Walser@ATT.net Jean Hull widow of Steve Hull sent a message: “All is well although living alone has its limitations. Still enjoy private teaching of selected adults and children, four days a week . It provides structure to life and I need structure! Church work, friends and my Sheltie, Molly, are all-enjoyable. I can’t wait for the 60th.” That’s the spirit, you won’t be alone there. Richard (Bull) Hinman forwarded to me, from John Engelman, ’68,
information about the Athletic Sponsors Program. John is the Alumni Coordinator
of the Athletic Sponsors Program and would like to increase the participation
in the program by spreading the word through the class Newsletters: “I
would like to introduce you to the Athletic sponsors Program. The Sponsors
Program raises funds from alumni, parents, and friends of the College
for the specific purpose of bringing recruited student-athletes to campus
for official visits. The Ivy League rules specifically prohibit using
funds from the general budget of the College for this purpose. Therefore,
in order to assist the coaches in their recruiting efforts, Ort Hicks
and Bob Blackman founded the Sponsors Program nearly 50 years ago. This
highly successful program has played a vital role in bringing to the
College some of Dartmouth’s finest student-athletes, and has contributed
enormously to the success of the athletic teams over the years. For example,
last year we raised over $300,000.00 from alumni, parents, and friends.
We paid for the recruiting trips to Hanover of over 270 student athletes;
of those, 160 completed their application to Dartmouth, 131 were accepted,
and 85% of those accepted (111) decided to enroll with the Class of 2007.
That yield of 85% is a testament to the importance of bringing these
outstanding student-athletes to campus. Once here, the College does a
remarkable job of selling itself. The competition for these outstanding
young men and women is intense, and without the support of the Sponsors
Program many of these potential applicants would never have the opportunity
to visit Dartmouth, and in many cases would not even consider applying
to the College. While the recruited student-athletes are the direct beneficiaries
of the Sponsors Program, I am convinced that the entire Dartmouth Community
benefits from this program, because of the remarkable talents (athletic
and otherwise) that these young men and women bring to the College. The
Sponsors Program also pays for coaches’ visits to the homes of
recruits, as well as recruiting materials such as media guides/brochures
for all varsity teams; we also produce The Big Green Sports News, and
award winning comprehensive newsletter sent 8 times a year to all Sponsors. Moe and Jane Fyre have announced with great pride, their first grandchild, Benjamin, to (daughter) Alison and Ric Cabot in Stowe, VT June 27, 2003. We are so pleased. Congratulations to all. Peg and Harry Hampton are looking forward to the 60th which they intend to attend. Harry received a note from Molly Oldfield (Barney’s widow) that: “After two years of ailing health, she is well along the recovery road, at a new address: 102 Brooksby Village Drive, Unit #22, Peabody, MA. 01960. This puts her within a few miles of family. She is thinking positively about renewing her D’45 connections.” William S. Hatt reports that: “ wife Joan had successful coronary stent 3 months ago. I (Bill) go to volunteer at “Genesis” Health Clinic here in Sarasota on Thursdays pay me what I’m worth! Regards to all the ‘45’s.” The only address I have for Howie Sawyer, Jr. is” 3730 Cadbury Circle, Apt 627, Venice, FL 34293-2216 George Miller has forwarded a new home address: 7120 Cedarwood Circle, Boulder, CO 80301 Ph. 303-530-1174 E-mail Gxray501@AOL.NET Also a new address for Murray Sams Jr. 500 Three Islands Blvd, #321A, Hallandale, FL 33009, Home Ph. 951-457-9090, Bus Ph. 305 362-6222, E-mail, TrinaSams@earthlink.net, Fax, 954-457-9090 Earl Wise reports: “At 80, I am bucking the trend to down-size as my wife and I have recently bought a much larger house in Sarasota to meet the familial needs when offspring (7), their spouses (5) and grandchildren (9 2/3) come to visit in the winter. Seventeen years of retirement have been filled with travel, spans of governance in clubs and condominiums, and in keeping up with the growth of our family. While I have met up with Dartmouth folks over the years the inclination to attend reunions has been missing, but I enjoy reading the Mail Call. New address is: 5627 Kosteli Pl., Sarasota, FL 34238, Ph. 941-926-1667 Bud Street was married to Mary Lou Thompson on November 8, 2003. It
was the third betrothal for each as they are two time widower and widow
respectively. They’ll be residing in her house in Barnstable, Cape
Cod and looking for a second home in Ponte Vedra, Fl. Mary Lou was class
of ’49 at Skidmore and is co-chairperson for her class fund raising.
They are both mindful that this will be their last ride on the merry-go-round. Russell (Rusty) Johnson, M.D. is still doing volunteer work at the County Hospital, still active in the Georgia Silver Haired legislature as a Senator, still participating in the Council for Seniors, still active in G.O.P. especially in support of President Bush, who I believe has credibility, stature, and guts to finish what he started, i.e. eliminate a dictator and fighting terrorism. Also active in the Georgia Society of Sons of the Revolution, and of course, active in my church. William Alpert (Bill) responded to Rick Crabtree’s inquiry: “I read in the ’45 Mail Call that Rich Crabtree was looking for members of the original “Dartmouth Squadron” I assume that was the Air Corps Squadron, I remember Rick from the Squadron – hope he remembers me. Bill, I did forward that information to Rick Fred Berthold mentions the pleasure Ruth Sisson (wife of Don Sisson) gives to many with her gift as a pianist, in the health center and in the gathering room at Kendal. This from Parker Coddington: “Since retiring from Harvard (as Director of Governmental Relations) in’92, I’ve kept busy with local, Sudbury, MA, government affairs—as a member of our Conservation Commission) protecting wetlands against development), our Technical Advisory Committee (on waste water treatment plans), and our Land Use Planning Committee. Have also kept up efforts to raise money and votes to purchase additional open land—for wildlife habitat, flood and erosion control, and passive recreation. And, as time allows, tennis—home court in summer and indoors club in winter. Finally, a couple of trips to Costa Rica and one to Cuba helped provide some broader perspectives on some of our state and local issues. In sum, though I’ve seldom returned to Hanover, I’ve never shed the Dartmouth green. Compliments from Ginny Ewell, widow of Winchester H. Ewell, thank you. Miriam Sommer has requested that I correct her E-mail address: John Bressler writes that they intend to attend the 60th, if they are still around and that he missed the fall Mini due to being in the hospital for a heart valve replacement, the recipient of one of modern medicines miracles. Two Dartmouth sons of Lloyd Nintzel, Chris ’70 from Maui, HI and Jeff’73 from Grantham, NH joined their five siblings in Tucson, AZ on October 18, to celebrate the marriage of the youngest of the group, Jim, to Jennifer Hard. Music at the outdoor evening ceremony was provided by a five piece Mariachi band at this Southwest theme event, quite a departure from New England rituals, but a pleasure for their mother Margaret and my wife Jane and me. Maxine Mitchell widow of Tracy Mitchell writes: “I enjoy receiving
the Mail Call, Tracy and I went to the reunions and really enjoyed them.
But since he passed away it would not be possible for me to come but
I enjoy reading about them. Vermont is such a beautiful state. I have
moved into a retirement home and like it very much. Thank you for sending
me the invitation to come.” Henry Dutcher writes, “I have now reached age 80, had a full knee replacement and have lots of aches and pains. Feels “funny” to be old! I don’t feel any desire to play any kind of sport-it’s not the same and when we mark down the date of our reunion we wonder if we’ll be alive to be there.” Certainly you will be there along with all of the rest of us who are enjoying the golden years. Harry Bissell can’t believe the football team actually won 3 games. He mentions that down there (Florida) they root for Jay Fiedler and the Dolphins, plays golf every Friday with Bob Freeman ’45. He reports that is their main activity since his boat remains in Maine. But he is looking forward to the 60th. John White wants to remind everyone of the “Mini-Mini” next winter in Florida, same location-Ponta de Leon Park in Ponta Gorda, FL. Sunday March 14, 2004. Joan Rowan widow of Moose Rowan has moved north to Brookline, MA to be closer to her daughter Nancy who lives 30 minutes drive from her new residence which has a spectacular view of the city of Boston. She reports that she had a wonderful three-week visit in June, with her English family in the picturesque village of Peaslake in County Surrey. New address: 20 Chapel St., Apt C-812, Brookline, MA 02446, and Ph. 617-566-6576 New address for Mrs. John F Monahan, Jr., 8750 Yardley Ct #205 Indianapolis, IN 46268 Sam Cutler and Gertie are planning on attending the 60th, health willing. Sam has had a rough year health wise, but is regaining strength and positiveness. Green Card info from Paul Samek, states that he and wife Arlene intend to attend the 60th. He said this is the first time he has ever filled out a Green Card. The first paragraph of the last Mail Call prompted him to do so. His primary contact with the class of ‘45 is Howie Germain in Santa Barbara, CA Trudie Butler widow of William Butler reports: “The Mini was wonderful in spite of the rainy weather. It was so good to see everyone that was there. I was glad to see so many notes from widows in the last “Mail Call.” I will be in touch about the 60th so make a note of the dates!! Widows can contact Trudie at 254 North Rd, Fremont, NH 03044, and Ph. 603-679-8630 Frank Hutchins has responded via Green Card that he and Jeanne intend to attend the 60th. From the notes I have received, it looks like it will be a full house for the 60th. As always, we have lost classmates. There is no easy way to report these losses so I will report what has been sent to me by widows, friends and the Alumni office. In Memory of John L. Byrnes, Jr., this was received from his daughter Sharon Byrnes Mixner, 1267 Burts Road, Lakewood, Ohio 44107. John passed away October 27, from congestive heart failure after some complications with diabetes. This was part of his service: “Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I’ve only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand, in your hearts, I’ve only gone to rest a little while. As long as I have the love of each of you I can live my life in the hearts of all of you.” Dr. Thurston John Carpenter died at home after a long battle with cancer, on December 13, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann, a son and two daughters.
