For the 1944 class bulletin in case no one had received it.   It was sent to me by his daughter.  Jay and I were at KUA together and roomed together for a short time in Ripley Hall at Dartmouth.  He and I got our private pilots license under the College's sponsorship of the Civiliam Pilot Trfaining program at Bugbee's Flying Service in White River Junction and then we both became Army Air corp pilots.   Jay was one of the most decent and honorable individuals I have ever had the privilege of knowing.  I have attached his obit in Microsoft Word format and even tried o print it out in this email.   Best personal wishes and merry Christmas.      Monte
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cape Elizabeth—Jay Herbert Downing died peacefully on November 14, 2007 at The Cedars in Portland, surrounded by his family. He was born in Littleton, N.H. on August 11, 1921 and was the only child of Herbert and Ida Downing.
Jay graduated from Littleton High School, and then attended Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H. for a post-graduate year. He attended Dartmouth College for one year before enlisting in the air training course offered to Dartmouth students when the US declared war in 1941. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Army Air Force and received his pilot's wings in June 1943. He was shot down behind enemy lines in Italy in October 1943, successfully evading capture by living in mountainous caves with another serviceman for 7 Vz months. They rejoined the forces in June 1944 when the Allies invaded Italy. Jay continued to serve in the Army until his honorable discharge in October 1945, whereupon he received a certificate of valor for engagement in 5 combat missions in the Mediterranean theater of air battle, as well as an Awards of Air Medal and an Award of Purple Heart.
On July 21, 1944 he married Mary Grey of Southern Pines, N.C. They returned to Littleton, N.H. in 1945 following Jay's discharge from military service. He became proprietor of his father's Ford dealership, which he ran from 1945 to 1969. In 1969, he became a motor vehicle supervisor for the New England Telephone Co. and stayed with that company until he retired in 1986. He was the father of Mary Ann Downing Butson of Littleton and Thomas Jay Downing of Cape Elizabeth.
In Littleton, Jay was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and the Littleton Lions Club. He loved animals, and throughout the years had Morgan horses and numerous other animals. Jay also had a passion for gardening and was very proud of his vegetable gardens. In later years, he experimented with growing perennial and annual flowers, as well as fruit-bearing trees and bushes. When he and Mary moved to Cape Elizabeth in 1990, he became actively involved in his grandsons' lives, often attending all of their sporting practices and games in one season: soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and baseball. In fact, one year he received the "grandparent of the year" award for attending all of his grandson Peter's lacrosse practices and games.
One of the highlights of his later years came at the age of 82 when he and other veterans were invited to speak about their war experiences to cadets at the Falcon Heritage Forum at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He and his family were proud of this invitation and opportunity.
Jay is survived by his wife of 63 years; his son and daughter; their spouses, Donna and Donald; his grandsons, Peter and David; his step-grandchildren, Eva and Josh; and his step-great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and John Michael.
A celebration of Jay's life will be held   .                   at All Saints Episcopal Church in
Littleton, N.H. for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a memorial donation in Jay's name to the American Cancer Society or to Riding to the Top Therapeutic Riding Center, 1545 Intervale Road, New Gloucester, Me. 04260
Arthur H. Kiendl Jr.
Arthur Herbert Kiendl Jr died in his home in Castine, Maine on March 2, 2005
He was the ninth headmaster at Mount Hermon and the last to serve in that capacity before the school’s merger with Northfield. Although his tenure from 1963 to 1971 was a stressful time for both school and country, fraught with civil unrest and intergenerational differences, Kiendl looked back on his eight years at Mount Hermon as one of the highlights of his life.
His undergraduate years at Dartmouth were interrupted by World War II. In his early 20's he was a captain in the Army Air Corps and served in the China-India-Burma theater. After graduating from Dartmouth in 1947 he taught English,. history, and geography and coached skiing at Cooperstown Academy. In 1951 he earned an MA from Columbia in higher education administration, which he also studied at the University of Chicago. Kiendl returned to Dartmouth for nine years as director of counseling, assistant dean, and associate dean of the college. From 1958 to 1963 he was dean of students at the University of Colorado. From 1971 to 1979 He was president of the Cranbrook School in Michigan. Kiendl later became headmaster of Nichols School in Buffalo, NY until he retired in 1981. In his retirement in  Castine, ME he enjoyed boats and being with people, and served on the faculty advisory board at Maine Maritime Academy.
NMH teacher Phil Schuster credits Kiendl with being the glue of the school during the turbulent 60's. “His character enabled him to carry on without losing his enthusiasm for nurturing young people or his focus on the mission of the school. He was down to earth, good-humored, direct. And he knew how to listen”. He was legendary for learning the first name of every new student early in the school year. He routinely joined teachers in the faculty lounge and circulated through the dining hall at meals. Every afternoon he dropped by the gym and playing fields to support athletes and coaches.
He is remembered for painting the campus doors deep red– the school colors– to raise school spirit and for introducing crew as a school sport. He also led the school through the demanding process of preparing for the merger with Northfield. In announcing his resignation Kiendl concluded, “Every man has to do what he wishes to do with his life. I hope that each one of you will try to do what I’ve tried to do with mine, and that is to live with honor, humility and humor.”
Kiendl’s first wife, Jean, and second wife Alice predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter Deborah Kiendl McLaughlin ‘65,son Arther H. Kiendl III, stepson Kenneth Lewis, and grand children Jesse Kiendl’93 and James and Alex McLaughlin. A niece and nephew Rachael ‘95 and Ryan’93 Champaigne, also attended NMH. Gifts in Kiendl’s memory may be made to the Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine P.O. Box 108 Castine ME 04421.
